The lower reaches of the canyon begin a transition from the alpine region to hills interspersed with rim rock outcrops studded with pinion pine and gambol oak, interspersed with stands of aspen, spruce and ponderosa pine. In this area there are many offshoots to the canyon that provide a multitude of opportunities for exploration and rock climbing. This portion of the canyon is also picturesque in the fall when the colors vary from the deepest crimson to the brightest yellows. The entire canyon and alpine experience, including hiking, horseback riding and camping, can best be summed up as naturalist John Muir described his wilderness experience as follows, "Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you... while cares will drop off like autumn leaves."
