This small, laid-back town at the base of the majestic Spanish Peaks at the northern end of the Cuchara Valley is located along the Scenic Highway of Legends (highway 12). La Veta, the vein, served as a vital lifeline a century ago; the town was originally a busy trading center, supplying the nearby area with goods. It is now home to a diverse population of artists, musicians and ranchers.
For lodging, the historic La Veta Inn in the heart of town is a wonderful place to stay or enjoy dinner. Just down the street from the Inn is the Ryus Avenue Bakery, offering delicious homemade breads, cinnamon twists and other delights. There are a number of art, antique and gift shops in downtown La Veta. For history buffs, a visit to Francisco Fort Museum in La Veta is a must.
